Japanese Teapots: A Masterclass with Ido Ferber
April 15th & 16th, 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
In this two-day Japanese teapot masterclass, you’ll learn how to throw, assemble, and finish a traditional kyūsu teapot. Traditionally used for brewing green tea, kyūsu teapots have subtle yet challenging details that are hard to perfect on your own.
Guided by a visiting instructor from Japan, you’ll explore the history and cultural significance of Japanese teapots, the art of brewing and serving green tea, and of course, how to make your own handmade kyūsu.
Day 1: Throwing the Components We’ll begin with an in-depth look at the kyūsu teapot—its cultural significance, unique shape, and practical use in serving green tea. Ido will demonstrate how to throw each component: body, lid, spout, and handle. You’ll then work on the wheel, throwing your own teapot components under personalized guidance.
Day 2: Mesh Making, Assembly, and Finishing Touches On the second day, we’ll focus on trimming and assembling the components made on Day 1. A key feature of the kyūsu is the ceramic mesh filter, delicately hand-formed and fitted to filter the small tea leaves. We’ll finish by refining your teapot with final touches before setting it aside to slowly dry.
Note: All materials and bisque firing are included.
Skill Level: This is an intermediate to advanced workshop. Participants should be comfortable centering and throwing smaller forms as well as trimming and assembling multi-part pieces. This workshop is not suitable for beginners.
Cancellation Policy: Full refunds minus a $50 processing fee are available if canceled 30 or more days in advance. A 50% refund is offered for cancellations made 14–29 days prior to the workshop. No refunds will be given for cancellations within 14 days unless the spot is filled. Cancellation requests must be emailed to info@yarostudios.com
